Stuck In My Ear: Jim Steinman / Meat Loaf – Rock And Roll Dreams Come True

Two versions of the same song. Both produced by Steinman.

Consider:

“Once upon a time was a backbeat, Once upon a time all the poets came to life. And the Angels had guitars even before they had wings. If you hold on to a chorus you can get through the night”

Or:

“You’re never alone, ’cause you can put on the ‘phones, and let the drummer tell your heart what to do.”

I like the Steinman version better. Better drums, better piano. The voice, (while it’s not Steinman, it’s Rory Dodd) not better. Must be played loud.

Very loud.

The interpretive dance, is straight out of an episode of Fame! from 1983.

A very BAD episode.

The Meat Loaf version: Better vocals, better video production. A somewhat famous actress. Don’t forget that both Meat Loaf and Steinman have a Musical Theater background. Maybe some show tunes would be in order!

Or not.

The line is “Once upon a time all the chords came to life.” Just letting you know.
